Jesus selected the chosen 12. They are Simon (Peter), Andrew, James (Zebedee), John, Philip, Bartholomew, Thomas, Matthew, James (Alphaeus), Lebbaeus (Thaddaeus), Simon, and Judas. So many we are familiar with. But do you ever wonder what happened to the rest? (*note to self - find out!) Jesus gives his disciples specific instructions in their journey in spreading the gospel. The instructions are as followed:
- Preach to the Jews (10:5)
- Heal (10:8)
- Trust God will provide for their needs (10:9-15)
- Be prepared for opposition (10:16-42)
Jesus really emphasized the point that following Him had a cost and would not be easy. The disciples would have to face rejection from people, even family members and friends (10:32-37), persecution (10:17), and possibly even death (10:28). But Jesus says "Do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. But rather fear Him who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell (v.28)." Despite these challenging circumstances they would have to face, Jesus says they have been given authority from above.
Life Application: Being a follower of Christ is not easy and has a high cost attached to it. People may laugh at you or wonder why you're life is so different. You may lose a lot of friends, family members and even popularity. But remember Christ says "Whosoever acknowledges me before man, I will also acknowledge before my Father in heaven. But whosoever disowns me before man, I will disown him before my Father in heaven. (v.32-33)" Stand firm and hold your ground, knowing that your reward will ultimately be great - an approval from God.
Dear God, I surrender my life to you, let it be used for your glory. Help me to not be affected by outside pressures against my faith but allow me to stay focused and receive the reward of my salvation.
